There are many books, articles and website dedicated to Food Combining and its health benefits, especially related to healing digestive issues.
This diet was created by Dr. William Hay in the 1920’s, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hay_diet). Dr. Hay created this diet after researching nutrition to help himself recover from several health conditions.
To follow this type of diet requires a lot of planning, diligence and commitment. The main benefit that I see if solving digestive issues.
The rules of food combing are as follows:
-
Eat fruit alone on an empty stomach, eating only one type of fruit or from one fruit family at a time. The illustration above shows the four fruit families, melon (off to the left), acid fruits, sub-acid fruits and sweet fruits. These fruit families are formed based on the water content of the fruit.
-
Do not eat protein and starch together
- Eat starch and vegetables together
- Eat protein and vegetables together
When eating a whole foods diet food combining does not become as essential.
This is a great diet to solve digestive issues and then keep in mind when making meal choices.
Interestingly if you look at many cultures these rules are followed, mostly in vegetarian diets, as is some unspoken rules have been in place for a long time. My belief is that many ancestral elders figured this out long ago based on how they felt after their meal.
I am trying to adopt the fruit rule, mostly because I know it digests very quickly. Fruit has become my afternoon snack, when I need one.
